CEUs for New Social Workers & Counselors: Your Must-Know Guide

Last week, I was asked by a recent graduate, “What is one thing you wish someone told you about navigating CEUs when you first started your career?” It reminded me how confusing this area can be when you are just starting out - and inspired me to write this article!

Congrats, new social workers and counselors! You're licensed – amazing! Now, let's talk Continuing Education Units (CEUs). These are essential for keeping your license active and staying sharp in your field. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Know Your State's Rules – Seriously!
This is NON-NEGOTIABLE. Every state has unique CEU requirements. Immediately check the website of your state's:
  • Board of Social Work or
  • Board of Professional Counselors/Therapists
Find out:
  • How many hours you need.
  • When you need to start accruing them! Some states offer a grace period for new licensees and won't count CEUs earned too early. Don't waste your time or money getting CEUs before your state says so!
  • Mandatory topics (ethics, cultural competency, anti-oppressive practice, etc.).
  • Approved providers (ASWB ACE, NBCC ACEP, etc.).
Not complying with these rules can lead to your license being suspended or even revoked.
These upcoming CEU programs are approved by ASWB and NBCC, as well as a number of individual state boards, for social workers and counselors.
2. Plan Smart, Learn Well!
Don't wait until the last minute!
  • Budget: CEUs can be pricey. While free or low-cost options are great, try to invest in some relevant, meaningful topics that truly enhance your skills and passion for your work, if you can afford to. Your professional development is worth it!
  • Record Everything: Keep certificates! You'll need them if your board ever audits you.
3. Why It Matters (Beyond Compliance)
CEUs aren't just about keeping your license. They're about:
  • Staying Current: New research, techniques, and ethical dilemmas emerge constantly.
  • Better Care: Continuously learning helps you provide the best possible service to your clients.
  • Your Growth: It's an investment in your career and passion!
Embrace CEUs as a continuous journey of learning. It's how you stay sharp, ethical, and effective as a helping professional! You got this!
